The moralistic urgency to preserve life in the womb evaporates once a poor child is born

Thank you Judith Truesdell for your Dec. 28 My Turn regarding the imminent threat to women’s right to abortion. Of your critical arguments, one especially resonated regarding the inequality of women: “There is no comparable situation in medical practice that affects all people, including men.”

Two additional points of justice come to mind.

The moralistic urgency to preserve life in the womb evaporates once a poor child is born: One in six U.S. children live in poverty, more than the number of poor adults; and 4 million youth are homeless. Second, the majority of states certain or likely to ban women’s right to abortion are the same states that were slave-holding and then passed Jim Crow laws after slavery was outlawed to keep African Americans poor and an underclass.
